Robotics and Automation in Mining Conference: Wrap Up

Last week, the Robotics and Automation in Mining Conference kicked on in Perth with an exceptional lineup of speakers ready to share ideas and information on how technology and digitisation are helping shape mining.

It was fantastic to see so many members of the CORE community either speaking or exhibiting across the two days including:

  • Kylah Morrison, General Manager - WA & SA from METS Ignited delivered a presentation on 'Rewarding innovators by investing in technology that enables the Resources and Energy Sector' and moderated a panel on 'Models for collaboration to innovate technology'

  • Justin Strharsky, Founder at Unearthed delivered a thought provoking session on 'Automation and the decentralised workforce of the future'

  • Dr Benjamin Kaebe, Executive Director at Space Industries delivered a presentation and an update on the Western Australian Space Precinct (WASP) - a very exciting development and one to watch!

  • Razor Labs were an exhibitor at the conference, alongside some fantastic companies such as Percepto, Exor Oceania, auto-mate, Flanders, Emesent, and more!

Tamryn Barker, Co-Founder of CORE and CORE Skills Lead, delivered a presentation on 'Building the data-fit organisation of the future and moderated a panel on 'Digital literacy and technology innovation'

During her presentation, Tamryn explored the challenges and opportunities of building a data-fit organisation and how companies can practically and reliably build and measure value derived from real-time and real-world data.

Data Fitness is a whole-of-organisation concept, with every role having a data capability need. Building a 'Data Fit Organisation' however, is challenging. Studies show that less than 5% of companies' data meets basic quality standards; approximately 60% of company leaders overestimate their company data culture, with the vast majority of leaders being unaware of their organisation's data capability.

Tamryn stressed the importance of determining an industry-ready way to map, assess and improve data capability to support the Data Fit Organisation of the future. Informed by the 'Fitness-To-Operate' safety competency framework developed for the offshore oil & gas industry and in consultation with 20 industry partners and in collaboration with the Future of Work Institute at Curtin University, a Data Fit Organisation model and capability assessment framework has been developed. With a particular focus on integrating 'social' capability, in terms of culture and behaviours, together with process and technology, the framework aims to guide an assessment and insight to lead organisations to 'data fitness.'

The conference, hosted by the Energy Conference Network gave the Perth mining and technology community an opportunity to come together to explore the future of mining.
