Hot 30 2021 - Where are they now?!
In late 2020, CORE Innovation Hub announced the inaugural Hot 30; a curated list of technologists and entrepreneurs harnessing innovation to help shape the future of mining and energy. Thirty companies were named from across Australia, highlighting the world-class capabilities this country has when it comes to mining and energy technology development and deployment.
Where Are They Now?
All of the current Hot 30 Winners have been doing some great things in the past 12 months and it has been fantastic to follow their respective successes over the last year. We’re bringing you the latest news and updated from a handful of winners. Stay tuned over the coming weeks to hear more about the companies involved with the Hot 30 and where they are now.
Fleet Space
Adelaide company Fleet Space Technologies has just raised $36 million through a Series B investment round to expand its workforce and increase capacity to manufacture miniature satellites in South Australia.
The Internet of Things (IoT) company recently announced its targeted $US25 million funding round had been oversubscribed, reaching $US26.4 million and would allow it to increase the size of its constellation of nanosatellites.
Fleet’s existing network is made up of six satellites, each about the size of a shoebox, that have been launched to orbit progressively since November 2018. It aims to build a constellation of 140 small satellites in Low Earth Orbit.
Rig Technologies
Rig Technologies’ vision is to accelerate downhole drilling innovation for the mining industry globally. The dedicated team has been working on developing a robust roadmap that will deliver the full suite of geophysical measurements, all captured during drilling operations and transmitted live to their cloud-based data insight platform, drillNFO.
That vision has taken a huge leap forward with the recent announcement that Rig Technologies has been acquired by Orica. Orica is one of the world’s leading mining and infrastructure solutions providers. From the production and supply of explosives, blasting systems, mining chemicals and geotechnical monitoring to their cutting-edge digital solutions and comprehensive range of services, ASX-listed Orica aims to sustainably mobilise the earth’s resources.
Western Air
Western Air has gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months. Having relocated to a new state-of-the-art office and warehouse space as part of Tonsley Innovation District, Western Air was recently awarded the Department for Energy and Mining, South Australia Premier's Award Commendation for Productivity and Improvement in the Resources Sector.
That is not all either! Co-owner Carly Ascott was also recently awarded a Winnovation Award for Women in Innovation in South Australia for her work in founding Bushfire Kids Connect. A not-for-profit aiming to create connectedness between children in fire affected regions throughout Australia.
DIGITAL TWINNING
Digital Twinning’s Ed Cronin was also recently acknowledged at the Department for Energy and Mining, South Australia Premier's Award as a Young Achiever for his pioneering work bringing digital twinning technology to the next generation.
Ed has been instrumental in delivering the partnership with South Australian High School, St Mary’s College. The partnership sees the next generation of young female technologists not just learning about digital twinning technology but designing and building their own digital twins to solve some key sustainability challenges in the future.
