Meet CORE Connect Speaker: Mariel Renteria Principal of Innovation at BHP
Principal of Innovation at BHP, Mariel Renteria is on a mission to create a brighter future of the mining sector. Mariel has forged a formidable international career as an intra-entrepreneur, investor and board member with 7 years in the venture capital sector and a portfolio of six startups in mining, food-tech, ed-tech, e-commerce and on-demand delivery. She is a Member of the World Economic Forum- Global Shapers Community and brings with her cross-cultural experience in different industries, roles and geographies: Peru, the United States, Australia and China.
Her work as an entrepreneur has seen her co-found Kunan, a startup accelerator that works with 250+ social enterprises offering seed funding, training and mentorship along with co-founding Deep Pit Technology, a startup that develops AI solutions for mining operations in Latin America. And if that wasn’t enough Mariel’s previous roles inlcuded serving as managing director of AEF, the foremost Peruvian business association that boosts entrepreneurial and management skills in family-owned businesses.
CORE is so excited to host Mariel for CORE Connect in June to discuss how collaboration fuels sustainable growth. We sat down with her prior to the event to understand more about her current role with BHP and what she hopes to get out of her session at CORE Connect.
CORE: What does your role entail within the business and what will your key focus be in the coming months?
MARIEL: My role is about partnering the most innovative startups and research institutes to accelerate the development of breakthrough technologies that help BHP and the broader mining secotr to achieve sustainable growth.
CORE: What are your thoughts around the pace of technological change in the resources sector?
MARIEL: We have come a long way and the technological change has certainly accelerated in the last years but it is still not enough to address our challenges. We need a better bridge between R&D, Startups and Mining companies.
CORE: What does innovation mean to you and your company?
MARIEL: Simple! It is at the core of my work and the work of BHP across all functions and operations.
CORE: What are you most excited about covering in your upcoming session?
MARIEL: To engage and receive inputs from other professionals.
