Brenton Welford, Co-Founder of Vilota Chats to CORE Ahead of Tech Talks in Perth

Meet Brenton Welford. Brenton is the co-founder of Vilota, a provider of positioning solutions for GPS denied environments, utilizing visual locational data. Brenton has spent the last ten years building companies which utilize drones, robots, 3D special data, and autonomous vehicles to address some of the big problems in mining, energy, and smart-cities.

His latest venture, Vilota solves localisation challenges in the mining, construction, robotics, drones and mobility industries. They design and manufacture Visual Positioning Systems (VPS) which output precise position without GNSS, extending the limitations of localisation in obstructed environments. Their 3D visual sensing solutions provide businesses the opportunity to develop their own robotic applications. This is made possible by creating standalone perception systems which are modular, accessible and reliable.

Brenton will be joining METS Ignited’s Kylah Morrison for Tech Talks in Perth this June. In this deep dive chat, Brenton and Kylah will explore visual positioning, the limits of localization and the impact on the mining industry.

The pair will touch on:

  1. Why do we need additional methods of positioning for industrial environments?

  2. How can visual data be used to give locational data

  3. What are the limitations of this method?

  4. What’s next? Pathway to commercialization

Ahead of Tech Talks, we sat down with Brenton to explore Vilota and the topic of this Tech Talk in more detail.

What does your role entail within the business and what will your key focus be in the coming months?

Everything beyond coding and direct engineering, my role includes:

  • Understanding the Market

  • Customer Engagement

  • Understanding Customer Problem Statements

  • Building Company Infrastructure

  • Building Team

  • Raising money

What are The industry challenges you are facing at the moment?

Being early stage, finding the right team, particularly engineering is critical to success and finding a Visionary Partner who wants to codevelop the first implementation.

What other industries could benefit from this technology, what’s outside the current scope?

Conveying the scope of a really big problem, and the structure of an elegant solution that can address it.
