Tech Talks Take 5 with Dave Lawie, Cheif Geoscientist & Chief Technologist - Mining at IMDEX
CORE Hub, Perth is so excited to be hosting Dr Dave Lawie at our next Tech Talks session presented by METS Ignited.
Dave has been the Chief Geoscientist for IMDEX since 2012 and Chief Technologist – Mining for IMDEX since 2015. He holds a PhD in Geosciences and Analytics from the University of New England and held global positions in exploration geochemistry and research and development. In 2004 he cofounded a company that specialised in geochemistry and geometallurgical consulting services, cloud-based data management and the ioGAS desktop analytics software.
As Chief Geoscientist for IMDEX and Chief Technologist for IMDEX Mining Solutions, Dave’s focus is promoting the suite of existing and emerging IMDEX technologies to ensure that as exploration and resource companies find, define and mine new discoveries they do so with speed and precision. He has a strong interest in how resource companies will find and provide the metals needed to enable the renewable energy transformation that will be required to meet ambitious decarbonisation targets.
Joining Kylah Morrison, METS Ignited General Manager for WA & SA on October 18, Dave will be exploring the role of Robotics, Automation and Analytics in the Development of Imdex’s Blast DOG.
Ahead of the session, CORE sat down with Dave to find out a little more.
What does your role entail within the business and what will your key focus be in the coming months?
My role with IMDEX is diverse but my primary focuses include maintaining relationships with the global resources industry from exploration through to production ensuring IMDEX is aligned with the future direction that the industry is taking and providing thought leadership.
What are 2-3 industry challenges you are facing/coming across?
Provision of metals for de-carb
Attracting talent
Engaging the community in the absolute importance of mining to their future
Balkanisation of resources supply chains
What are your thoughts around the pace of technological change in the resources sector?
The resources sector I believe is more ‘permissive’ for technology than ever currently, but is that fast enough?
What does innovation mean to you?
Innovation is about doing hard things that aim for a 10-fold improvement in ‘X’, whatever that is, not 10%.
What are you most excited about in your upcoming session?
Telling people about this unbelievable project with the strange name, “BlastDOG”. It touches on all the themes raised above
If you would like to hear more about BlastDOG, join CORE Hub Perth Kayla and Dave from 12 noon on October 18 for a deep dive into robotics, automation and mining.
